I remembered I kept seeing posters for the Damien Hirst exhibition at the Art Gallery so I went for a look. I have been vaguely aware of Hirst but not very interested. However he does seem like a bit of a chancer and chancers have to be some of the most interesting folk around - Malcolm McLaren, Bill Drummond etc.
The posters I saw had a sheep in a box on them and that's pretty much the impression I got on going in. A room with a sheep in a box in it. I checked out the other exhibits and I was out in about ten minutes. Dead butterflies on a wheel. Photo of a severed head. Anatomical models and a sculpture of an angel with cross-sections cut out to show the skull, bones, intestines etc.
I then spent the next full day thinking about what I had seen and thinking about the peculiarity of life and death. I read up some stuff about Hirst and the way he is playing with perceptions of art and also playing with and exploiting rich idiots who control everything around them with money but are buying into his pieces which are a statement that they can't control their own mortality. I like the humour.
Somebody had stuck a comment up at the gallery saying, "Why has Leeds City Council spent our money on showing this drivel" I liked that as well.
If you get chance check it out.
http://www.youtube.com/user/BBC#p/search/0/K0vL0V1Vklo

A Bit More Blog!

Whoo - kind of dropped the ball on this, what with loading 600 or so products onto the site.
We're really pleased with how the new site worked out though. It has a lot more features than the old one such as the Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr links. You may notice there is also an option for you to upload photos of yourself with our products next to each product. If we use a photo you send us on the site we will send you a discount voucher to use on the site too, so it's well worth doing. Plus you get to feature on the site!
Here in Vultureworld we are always telling each other about stuff we've read, seen, heard etc. as the staff genuinely are all vultures who love finding new stuff to enjoy. Last year we went to see the fantabulous Tim Minchin and also were lucky enough to get to meet him. He is a great guy. We do give some of his stuff a whirl in the shop as it makes customers smile : ) Here's Tim in action, doing his bit to help us all evolve a bit:
http://www.youtube.com/user/timminchin#p/u/24/5wLHVjOos8Y

Hey everyone, welcome to our new website!

Finally our new website is here and we have this fancy blog thing so we can keep you up to speed on all things Culture Vulture.

For those of you who have used the old site, we are hoping you will find this a much smoother experience! We have also managed to add so many more of our products so that you will have a much better reflection of what our store is all about.

As for the blog, we have been thinking about what we want to do with this. We have a staff and associates who are all deeply interested in pop culture. We all have our own interests which we add to the mix which makes our business what it is. In the shop we are always sharing stuff we have seen or found, the common thread being that we consider it to be quality. It is difficult to list all of our influences but a few which spring to mind might be: New York City culture, pop art, indie music culture, the gay scene, punk, modern art, Japanese culture and kitsch.

Anyhows, we didn't want to bore you with a blog about what we had for dinner, who cleaned the cabinets today etc. so we're going to post a series of links to stuff we like for you to take a look at. Some you will already probably know and that's OK because this stuff can usually be re-enjoyed over and over. Other stuff may be a bit more obscure. The idea is it took us a long time to hit on some of these so you can come here and we will surprise you with something interesting. At least that's the theory!
Along the way you can send us in anything you would like us to post and we can only say we will consider it! So if you have a favourite link or are in a band or an artist and you want to send something, feel free.

Here is something fun to look at to get the ball rolling. It does have a couple of swears so not for kids : ) Welcome to our world!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pIrvpn3k9A4
